Wow! What a performance Bernadette Peters gave at the Tony's singing 'Rose's Turn'. It may not be the best version of the song vocally, but she performs the song like no other. Completely absorbing herself in the role, conveying a whole barrage of emotions in such a short space of time. You feel the disappointment with her, the bitterness, the regrets, everything.
I can't believe the Tony went to Marissa, I mean she was good but it was nothing extraordinary. I think people felt it was the politically correct thing to do.

I am not worrying about it, I am just annoyed that exceptional talent is now (progressively) being over-looked for the more commercial and less talented performers. It is even happening in the show categories, with commercial popularity winning over artistic skill. I mean Jersey Boys and The Pyjama Game? Say no more.
I think your i.d. name tells us which side of the fence you sit on.
There is a place and demand for these shows but not at the Tony's.

Pajama game
It will be allright!
They are talented. The tony's don't always mean it's the greatest.

Posted: 6/21/06 at 4:13pmWell, I saw both performances live. It may not be as cut-and-dried as you think. Bernadette's performance on the Tony's of Rose's Turn (1 number out of context of the show) was good. In the context of the entire show, I felt her performance was VERY labored. She did a good job trying to perform a role that (IMHO) was too big for her. Marissa was incredible in a very fun and uplifting show. She's a very talented girl and gave an amazing performance. Bernadette's illness during previews might have played into the decision and she also might have had an impact that she had just won a Tony for best actress in a musical. To base your opinion on her Tony performance isn't fair to her or the other actresses nominated.

well hanna, so did i and i thought bernadette's performance was far and beyond marissa's. she was the best actress of the year.
HOWEVER. this truly is a 3 year old argument. get over it.
and don't ever insult my hubby elphaba again. else i whip you.

us? Who the F are you.....I've earned an "us" here....judging from the few times you have posted, you have not.
Guess you don't pay any attn around here, as if you did you would have seen my numerous anti-Wicked posts.
Don't ever assume........it only makes an ass out of you.
Whining about who did or didn't win an oscar three years ago is just childish.......and serves no purpose.

woah there. everyone step back and breath. Too much drama for a theatre board. Let's just agree to disagree. And let whomever post whatever they want on the board without any judgement, scrutiny, or ridicule.

AngusN, I understand your argument. For a long time, the Tonys haven't been about "the best". There are some huge goofs along the Tony road.
But remember the lyrics of Stephen Schwartz:
No one mourns the (loss of the Best Musical Tony for) Wicked

Posted: 6/21/06 at 4:30pmI also agree with Hanna. As good as she was in "Rose's Turn," it was too little, too late in context of the show as a whole ... but then again, that is how I felt about Tonya and "Lot's Wife" in Caroline or Change.

me too, DBilly.
Tonya moreso. Both were trying so hard that it showed.

I completely agree. Bernadette was grossly miscast as Rose, she's just not the stature or vocals that the role required. She was not intimidating at all...came across as the annoying little mother in law from hell but nothing more.
Marissa worked her a$$ off! They made the right choice. :)

Rose's Turn, within the context of the show (at least when I saw it) wasn't nearly as impressive. Bernadette had worked so hard for 2 1/2 hours that she didn't the necessary bravura to sell the song like she was able to at the Tony's. It's a VERY close call, IMO, but I give a slight edge to Marissa. (Lord knows, I might have given a slight edge to Bernadette in an older thread -- my main point is that no one was robbed.)
EDIT: More importantly, to base a decision strictly on a video from a site not to be named is quite a bit unfair.

Posted: 6/21/06 at 5:19pmdoodle, I am glad someone else agrees; it is one of those things that belongs on that thread about unpopular opinions. I do think, in Tonya's case, part of the fault lies with the script itself.

I hate this bullsh*t of attacking the original poster and saying things like, "get over it!". If one would take the time to READ the post and see what AngusN is actually saying, it would be clear that there is nothing for him/her to get over. He isn't getting bent out of shape, ranting over this or rudely hammering his opinion into anyone's head. He was simply bringing up a subject for discussion and yes, it does indeed open the floor for friendly debate. I'm sorry, but isn't this kind of thing (in combination with news, photos, etc.) the purpose of a Broadway message board?
It's also fair and appropriate to bring up a theatre subject or debate no matter what time period it's from. Perhaps the poster just now saw this performance clip for the first time(and judging by the "Wow!" at the beginning of the post and the now deleted reference to youtube.com, I imagine this was the case) and wanted to comment, given the new-found exposure. It would be perfectly fine to bring it up at anytime, but this poster's new awareness of the performance makes it even more relevant.
Sorry, I'm off my soapbox now. I just think there's plenty of hostility that can find somewhere else to play.
