Sherie Rene Scott's vocal range?

How do I find this out?

I want to know if she's like me. I am a mezzo-soprano and I have a 2 and a half octave range from F# to B....

If someone can help me, that'd be great.

I don't know her range but this is what I'd do. I would try to find the lowest note you know she has recorded and her highest and that should give you a pretty good indication...

I'd imagine she has a pretty solid range and is a mezzo... judging from everything she's done and her solo album.

For a high schooler 2 and 1/2 octaves isn't bad at all, your range will increase as your voice matures....

I'm not sure why Vincent assumed she was patting herself on the back. She was just giving the details of her range. I didn't read any self-aggrandizement in that statement.

I swear, some people on this board are here just because they've become somehow reliant on conflict.

And as for the question of range - we all know several people who have large ranges...and some very famous singers have exceptionally small ranges. Range is a odd topic. Your range is just fine, Ifonly. 2 and 1/2 octaves is great and your top will continue to bloom as you get older. After all, the female voice (generally speaking) doesn't reach maturity until around age 28.

In the meantime, I would recommend not concerning yourself with Sherie's range. Voices are so varied that to compare two of them is like comparing a cello and a harmonica. You should focus on what makes your voice special, and how to communicate through song. We don't want someone with the same qualities as Sherie Rene Scott - we want someone with the qualities of IfonlyIdefiedgravity.

I think she hits a B5 in "Love is My Legs." Not a very good one, but she still hits it. Though most mezzos can hit that note... at least in the opera world, anyway.

Also, don't call yourself a mezzo yet. Most girls are untrained sopranos.

I would say don't call yourself anything. Categorizing at 18 is not healthy...in fact, I think it's unhealthy at any age.
Just sing and love every minute of it.

I disagree with that, Spork. A lot of girls (like myself), who are trained and are continuing to train, classify themselves as altos and maybe mezzos. This does not mean we're "untrained sopranos." Some notes simply are not in a person's range no matter what training they have under their belt. That's why there are vocal classifications to begin with.

Well, if we're really going to pick this apart, fach (category) is determined primarily by vocal color (and a tiny bit of physical appearance) - not specific notes.
Granted, a girl with no high notes will not be a soprano, but more often than not a woman with strong high notes, who has a thicker / warmer sound will lean toward either dramatic soprano, or mezzo roles. (Not in all cases, I know)

It is true however, that Mezzo's have suffered much the same fate as bisexuals, in certain regards. They are assumed by many to be no more than "undecided sopranos" who are scared of their high notes. Much the same way lyric baritones are said to be scared tenors.

Ultimately, your voice at 18 is nowhere near where it will be when you are 19, 20, 26, etc. Please don't worry about this. I'm 26-years-old and still don't know if I am a bass or a bass-baritone or a baritone...and I've continued to get work and go to school. You've got plenty of time to be pigeonholed...enjoy the freedom.

Totally agree jrb. I don't like the labeling at all. I mean, when I was in high school (awhile back) I sang boys' tenor parts in choir if there weren't enough boys. I also sang alto and soprano 2. (mezzo) Now, I tend to sing all over the place, and even do higher music (soprano 1/lyrical). I consider myself mezzo but don't like to use the label.

OK since this post is here im going to express my concerns.

I'm 17, have been singing for about 4 years and I've had very little progress with my higher range, my highest note comfortably is a B above middle C, which is defiantly not encouraging... I can hit F,G and A 2 above middle C okay as well, its like the notes in the middle disappear and i get a female falsettoish tone, which is not nice at all... I'm getting concerned cause I want to make my livelihood in theatre but such a crap range makes that seem impossible..

fetzles1490: I'm not saying that they don't exist. What I am saying is that a lot of girls try to sing high notes, can't, and assume that they are altos/mezzos. But I tend to define fach in the operatic sense, in which classification relies more on vocal weight and timbre than on just being able to hit certain notes.

Either way, I think that someone the OP's age should remain open about where she could fall.

IMO, it's not Sherie's range that makes her the singer she is.

Any hack can have range, but what makes Sherie such a spectacular performer is her acting and her tone. She puts so much life into her music, and it doesn't come from range. It comes from inflection, emotion, and tone.

Don't overestimate range. It's a good quality, but it doesn't define a good singer.

I agree scaryclowns. I understand what you mean. I used to often compare my range to many other performers and I do like to know the range of performers i idolize just for the fun of it. But just because I can i have 6 octaves and Raul Esparza only has 4 (this is just an example, i dont know Raul's exact range) doesn't mean anything. Its just a fun fact to know about Raul. The creator of this topic, i think was just curious...thats it.

I know you were just picking numbers out of the air, but I need to say this because the image has always made me laugh - in order to have a 6 octave range, your vocal folds would have to stretch down to your toes - and even then it would be rare. You'd probably just have a really low, lame sound with a wide vibrato. lol

Just to reiterate - screw range. It's all about communication. Just sing. The second you get bogged down in range, things start to get all mixed up.
