I assumed that the new Mary Poppins numbers weren't written by the Sherman Brothers because they'd retired.
Then I saw this:

And then I remembered that the Sherman Brothers also wrote the new Chitty numbers.
So why didn't they write the new Poppins numbers??

I beleive it had something to do with CM coming with Drewe and Stiles already attached.
I believe that their old songs, as beautiful as they are, neede some refreshment towards the new approach to mary poppins, and the musical STAGE.
i believe that had the new MP songs been written by the Sherman brothers, Mary Poppins would have been another "Chitty"- bloated and sugary movie-on-stage.
The must be up there in years by now.
Love the Brothers. They have written some of my all time favorites songs. Too bad Busker Alley was such a mess.
They really do write broadway worthy stuff.

Ms. Travers and later her estate mandated that the songwriting team for any further development of a "Mary Poppins" musical be British. This is why the Sherman Brothers weren't allowed to write the new songs for the show.

They may write sugary sweet stuff, but they had some clever lyrics. An underrated score is "The Slipper and the Rose". Great stuff.
Last summer the Fringe Festival in Minneapolis presented Jungle Mary Bang Bang, a revue of Sherman Bros. songs. It was the best show I saw last summer. They did Sisters Suffragette as an Andrews Sisters number and It's a Small World in 4 part harmony.
I recommended to the musical director that they expand the hour long show and open it for an extended run, but that hasn't happened yet.
Their score for Over Here is fun
The show was also quite entertaining with than unknowns Marilu henner & John Travolta.
