What does anyone think the ending represented, was the ghost real, did she leave him ?

I saw the matinee yesterday and am still kind of running the end over in my mind.

There's an interesting thread about it here:

ETA: I was also wondering if Ian saw her. It all happened so quickly, and especially with her reveal coming right after hearing him say that years ago he would have liked to have seen a ghost for a bit of proof that God exists, etc...After all that, did he actually see her? The last I noticed, Brian was looking out into the audience, facing away from her, and then for all 3 seconds that she was there, I found myself staring at her, rather than taking the whole thing in.

But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

I think they were playing with the idea of reality and belief. When John asks Ian if he believes him, Ian's response is that he believe John saw something, but not necessarily *in* the something itself. So, the ending is so quick. Not only do they play with that idea within the story; I heard people questioning whether or not HE saw her, but they play with it as what the play leaves to its audiences, as well -- I heard people going "did you see it? I did," or saying that they didn't, because since it was so quick, it really depended on where you were looking.

On another note, I just saw the play tonight, and I was so, so petrified at the end. The audience all gasped aloud and I grabbed onto and clung to my mom, no joke. I was so scared. Granted, I scare easily, but I found it a little bit unnecessary, simply in hopes of some serious shock value. I'm afraid I'm gonna have nightmares, or something.
