I said you act like it. Kind of like how you act like your company's production of Godspell is the definitive one.

this isn;t part of the question, but do you think ANY version of DotV (which I love too--being a huge Steinman nut) would have worked on Broadway?

I DO!!! I saw the show in Berlin and saw the potential the show had for being a HUGE hit on Broadway. The only changes I saw that were necessary were the choreography, mostly for Carpe Noctum and the Finale. But the show totally works in its original form and could have easily been transferred as is to Broadway with a simple translation. That production remains one of my all-time favorite shows. Even my non-German speaking friends and family adored it and still talk about it.

Most of the flops I saw in the 70s, 80s, and 90s I thought deserved to be, but one show I saw in previews I thought was reasonably strong and boasted a fine leading performance from Broadway newcomer David Allen Grier. The show was THE FIRST. It opened to bad reviews and closed within a few weeks. I attended the closing performance and I was shocked by the version of the show that they apparently opened. I could certainly understand why it didn't fly with critics. In-previews panic had driven lots of misguided changes. It seriously depressed me.
