How did Shoshana go from being in the ensemble in 'Hairspray' to the lead in 'Wicked'? Was she the Tracy understudy? Or was she a well known broadway star before that? I don't like her portrayal of Elphaba, but I do think she has an amazing talent.

She was in the ensemble of Hairspray and covered Tracy. Then, when Eden Espinosa left Wicked for Brooklyn, Shoshana replaced her as the Elphaba standby. After 4 months of standing by for Idina, Shoshana was given the role of Elphaba when Idina left.

Shoshana also played tracy on broadway for a while. That is the time when they eliminated the dynamite section in welcome to the 60's and she did riffs in that space. Didnt see it with her, but i know a dancer in the show so. . . . .

She went on as Tracy a couple of times, but she never actually took over the role for any period of time.

no, she actually played it for a while i believe right before MJW came back however they were still billing Carly Jibson however she had not gone on for over 3 weeks.

If you are referring to the time when MJW came back this summer (the only time she has come back to the show and taken over from Carly Jibson) you are completely and totally wrong.

Shoshana Bean has been in Wicked since January....

Shoshana never played Tracy on Broadway. She was the understudy for Tracy, Velma, and Prudy... but she never actually held the role of any character in Hairspray besides Shelley.

You are very well right, Last night i was at a party last night and a person there, who claimed to be in the cast, told me all that information. When I got home and checked his name in IBDB it turned out that it was false information that he gave me. I am very, very sorry for this post and I hope you dont hold it agents me in the future. But yes, I did she shoshana go on for Tracy as an us/ and she was amazing. Much better than MJW by far in my opinion. Thanks

Um...

I have heard recordings (Which were illegal, and aren't mine, so don't ask me for them) of Shoshana as Tracy...so she DID go on...although it might have been in Seattle and not Broadway.

No one said she didn't go on. We were saying that she never played the role full time. And certainly not this past summer as Horton tried to insinuate (Don't drink and post Horton!)

Thanks guys. To be honest, I can envisage her playing Tracy, she is quite quirky - boardering on irritating- and she definitelty has the voice to pull of the role.

There were illegal audio clips of her singing Tracy's numbers that were recorded when she went on. And that's all I'm going to say.

Shoshana originated the role of Shelley in the Broadway production of 'Hairspray'. She was the understudy for Tracy, Velma and Prudy. Shoshana was with Hairspray for about 1 1/2 years before moving on to be the stand-by for Idina Menzel in Wicked. Shoshana was NEVER given the role of Tracy.

Actually, she didn't riff all that much, but every once in a while she'd throw something fun into the mix.

I haven't seen that many spelling mistakes since that 6 year old joined the forum-- oh wait. I doubt you were drinking, cause you're obviously not of age.

And yeah, Shoshana wasn't given ANY role but Shelley. The End.
