Hi all!

New to posting, but been lurking for quite some time. My sister and I are avid theater-goers, but don't often have the luxury of making it to NYC for some TLC on Broadway. This weekend that all changes! So excited for our trip, but we're having a hard time figuring out what shows to see!

I'll take any recommendations, but the three we've currently been looking at are Tuck Everlasting, Fun Home, and The Color Purple.

Please keep in mind we're both new college grads so any advice on buying tickets at discount would be a huge help as well! We're there Friday-Sunday and planning on seeing a show each night (if I had my way and money, we'd see matinees too HA!).

Thanks so much in advance :)

For Tuck and Color Purple, I'd rush if I were you. For Fun Home maybe use TDF if you have an account or use TKTS. Some shows I'd recommend are Waitress and Shuffle Along (I'm not sure how the discounts are with those though.) If there aren't good discounts and you want to see other shows maybe see School of Rock. I rushed and got front row mezz on a Saturday matinee. Here's a website with all the rush/lottery policies: http://broadwayforbrokepeople.com

The cheapest way I've found would be getting rush tickets (if you google search "playbill rush" it should come up). It gives you policies on each show because they all have different offerings. Sometimes seats will be amazing and sometimes they'll be partial view, it varies I guess. I've found that rushing a show usually has better results than lottery, but I have won a ticket lottery before (only once because I was too unsure of it haha). I'd normally get to the box office line an hour before it opens, but since it's memorial day weekend I suggest getting there earlier. I was on the School of Rock line at 9 A.M. and it was sold out by the time it reached me, this was the week of new year's eve that's why I assume. The first people in line were there at 6:15 A.M.!!! Broadwaybox.com also offers some good codes for ticket deals and I saw some on this website as well. Keep in mind that a show's hype has gone down a bit, tickets will be easier to get. I got on the American in Paris line around 10:30 A.M. after the School of Rock line (box office opened at 10) and I got a front row seat for $50! That probably won't apply for the blockbusters though (Wicked, Hamilton, etc.)

If you check out indivduals shows on this site, it will show you a variety of different discount options. http://www.show-score.com/shows

As recent grads you qualify for tdf. $36 to join & $47 per ticket for musicals and $41 for plays. You would only need 1 account. Choices are limited on weekends though. It also gives great deals on off Broadway. Off Off Broadway as low as $9. Consider that for your matinees. Check out the Flea Theater in TriBeCa as well.

Daddy Long Legs and The Robber Bridegroom both close this weekend. Haven't seen either but they have their fans here esp. DLL. Both are on tdf.

Fun home and/or the color purple are definitely worth seeing. I personally did not enjoy Tuck Everlasting at all. I know some did, but I was bored and not impressed. I'd recommend Bright star!  I adored it and the cast recording is available for free so you can see if you like the music. http://www.npr.org/2016/04/21/474678104/first-listen-original-broadway-cast-recording-bright-star

robber bridegroom is another awesome off Broadway option that's closing soon!

Don't forget Hiptix for Roundabout shows. She Loves Me and Long Days Journey can be seen for 25 dollars per person for each show (provided they still have seats available).

Lincoln Center has LincTix, which you could use for King and I at 32 dollars.

Having seen all 3 of these shows, you can't go wrong! I fully realize these aren't any of the shows you mentioned, but of what you mentioned, I loved Color Purple and Fun Home.

Those are three great choices. For The Color Purple, pick a day when you're well rested and go early for the rush. Make a morning of it. Because there are a few of you, one person can leave the line to get breakfast or coffee. For Tuck, you should be fine with the in person box office rush. Fun Home is tricky because I don't know if they're still selling well enough to be doing SRO. You can try. Otherwise, you have the options of TDF, TKTS, and Audience Rewards.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!

What type of shows do you usually like? And you said you see a lot of theater at home, so I assume you get tours?

I like to tailor my advise a bit but my favorite shows playing right now are Daddy Long Legs (they sometimes have $20+$10fees on Goldstar), Bright Star (you can so rush but get there at 9am on the weekend) and Something Rotten (also one you probably good to get there at 9am for rush). I also loved She Loves Me ($25 HipTix).

Something Rotten will probably tour soon though, so you could wait.

Fun Home is a good show to see on Broadway, but they only have a digital lottery and standing room if it's sold out. Not sure what the discount situation is.

I didn't love Color Purple as much as others, and I suspect you have to get there pretty early on Memorial Day weekend

Tuck is a beautiful show and probably has a very easy rush.
