What are your thoughts on Show People magazine? From what I can tell, it's sold on news stands only in NYC (corrent me if I'm wrong). Is it a quality publication? worth subscribing? or not so much? thanks!

It is sold Nationwide and is distributed in Clear Channel Theaters.
A great publication. They carry Musto's hot list and Patrick Pacheco.

PS: As Musto's unpaid pr rep, I have to give it a thumbs up!

its a pretty thin magazine for only coming out 4 times a year. its worth subscribing to, but they could do a lot more with it.

Yeah...I enjoy it, but since it only comes out 4 times a year, there are often a lot of articles about shows that get dumped, or casting that falls through (ie: a whole spread on Jenna Elfman in Nine). But in general, it's a fun magazine. I always look forward to getting it in the mail!

But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

It is worth reading for Musto's hot list.
I give it a hot list thumbs up.
re: Show People magazine
They were handing out copies in Bryant Park yesterday.
The piece on Sutton was kind of cute.
I wish it was a monthly.
My favorite piece was the piece with Scott Wittman.
He was a model, he looked so cute with Laura Bell Bundy.
Funny, I see him with Lupone, Bundy never with Scott.

I subscribe...and would LOVE to actually receive the magazine before threads about it's articles are posted here!! (ex: Raul in ShowPeople!) :)

This happens way too often with this mag....and I agree with whoever pointed out that it's awfully thin when it only comes out 4 times a year! ShowMusic at least was worth the wait!

And I'll never give up my 5 years of back issues of TheaterWeek and InTheater...

JustMe...So what's your preference: TheaterWeek, InTheater, or Show People? Which covers Musical Theatre (my love) more?

Well, Theaterweek and InTheater are now defunct, but both did better justice to musical theater than ShowPeople. InTheater followed Theaterweek, and I believe ( but may be mistaken) that it was the same crew that put both magazines out?

ShowPeople is sort of like a thin People Magazine. A large portion of the people covered in ShowMusic are known more for their movie backgrounds. I understand it helps sell magazines to have Christina Applegate on the cover, but I'd rather see Carolee Carmello. Also, though I appreciate seeing any theater person in the magazine, I'd rather have an interview with Sherie Rene Scott than a photo shoot of her on vacation. One more thing, by the time ShowPeople comes out, much of the action covered in the magazine is old news.

Theater Week and Intheater came out weekly and I looked forward to receiving it because they interviewed "theater people" more than ShowPeople does. Both also had a good regional theater section and covered off broadway extensively. They also had a great column with upcoming casting rumors and the like. And the information was timely.

This does not mean I would cancel my subscription to ShowPeople; I'll take any publication that covers theater!

I subscribe to ShowPeople as well and I love it! It is too bad that it only comes every quarter. I think they have really nice articles and photo spreads.

I bought this springs issue in a Broadway store in NYC. I like this magazine, I actually want to subscribe to it.

I enjoy it. I love all of their articles and it is well worth the $15 to subscribe!
I agree that it is a thin magazine and they could come out with more issues...but it is kinda new and I don't think they have enough people buying it regularly - or enough staff.

2 years is not kinda new...they should have some substance by now!

I do agree though, that it's worth the $15 a year. And...if you live in NY, just buy it on the street...here in California, we are STILL awaiting the Summer issue! I don't know if NY subscribers have the same problem, but all my other mag subscriptions arrive BEFORE it's on the street!

thanks for all the opinions. I just got my first issue! Definitely worth the $13 I spent to have that much theatre info in one place :) (hello, Raul?! what a photo)

I didn't bother to renew my subscription. I found it to be nothing more than "fluff" with very shallow articles. (Did we really have to follow Michelle Lee through an antiques shop?)

Oh, please bring back Show Music Magazine or In-Theatre! Those were publications that had in-depth interviews and articles of great substance.

Agree Agree Agree!

INTheater was a favorite!! I still peruse my archives. Actual articles! About actual theater professionals! Not tidbits of useless information attached to large photo of some actor working out!!

That said...I still await the ShowPeople magazine. When one is starving for theater info in CA, one cannot be choosy...

*sigh*

FINALLY!

The ShowPeople magazine has arrived....and once again, instead of interviews with theater stars, we get photo spreads of a Mambo Kings actor doing pilates and Sarah Paulson fondling crystal in a store.

WHY??? WHY??? Is it so hard to interview them past the obvious ten minutes they spend with the actor?

I do enjoy the actor's experiences in theater stories, though. There are some priceless stories out there, and it's about time we heard them!

And yes...nice photo of Raul....
