Musicman...

Considering that Tommy was originally wriiten as a rock opera, recorded twice (once by the Who, the second by an all-star cast and an operatic choir) before it was made into a movie, I do not consider it to be a movie turned musical, due to the fact that it stayed truer to the original than the actual movie (which had a whole bunch of extra Really bad songs)

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Margo - I love your thoughts on Allegro. I think Weidman is a possibility, but I don't really see Meehan for this one. Kushner is an excellent choice given the material and I think Greenberg could also be a possibility, though he does not have a musical under his belt, he's great with structure and tone. After seeing Bounce and Prince's similar style in Candide and Parade, I just don't think he's a good choice for Allegro. John Caird and John Napier have proven to be a good team that can capture the essence of a show and create an atmosphere from it that will envelope the audience. Most recently, the underrated Jane Eyre was rather brilliantly staged combining cutting edge technology and minimalism to create the most effective memory piece I've seen. I think something along those lines would best represent R&H's visionary show. Of course, Nicholas Hytner and Bob Crowley hit the mark with Carousel (though not with Sweet Smell, but I think they did as well as they could given what they had to work with). As for orchestrations, Tunick is an absolute MUST and Gemignani is a given. I get chills just thinking about it.

You know I started thinking more about the definition of influential shows and more that qualify...I think La Cage Aux Folles has to be considered an influential one, as it was really the first successful show to focus on gay characters. Though other shows didn't really copy it, I would think it paved the way for many shows after it to feature gay characters as many, many do now. Just a thought.

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
