Show stoppers! — Page 2

The only show I saw that didn't get a standing ovation at curtain call was Urban Cowboy. I felt really bad. When I told my friend about it, he said I should have stood up and raised my hands and clapped "like the end of every bad 80's movie..."

My friends were sitting in the first row of Aida for one of Adam's last nights, and when they stood up at the end, a woman behind them yelled at them to sit down because she couldn't see anything.

My friend snapped, "No, I'm not sitting down. YOU STAND UP!"

yeah,i've never seen "Gimme Gimme" have a standing O' and i totally agree w/the x-mas tree lighting! that was awsome!

I have given WELL deserved standing o's on several occasions and been asked to sit down by nasty people behind me. Roxane Carrasco and Tracy Shayne's opening night together as Velma and Roxie on Broadway, I stood at the curtain call. The woman behind me told me she couldn't see, so I told her to stand up. She told me she didn't want to and I said oh well. She tugged on my jacket again and asked me to sit -- finally I replied "I have two of my best friends on that stage together about to bow -- I am NOT about to sit down because YOU can't see." she finally shut up. *sigh*

Anyway, I have only wittnessed three showstoppers in my life....

Bells Are Ringing Revival Final Performance -- June 2001
**After Faith Prince finished singing "I'm Going Back", the whole theatre erupted into applause. Everyone was collectively on their feet in a second, cheering, whistling and screaming. The applause lasted a good 2 minutes, till finally Faith and Beth Fowler had to break character onstage to turn and motion for the audience to sit down.

Hollywood Arms -- 2002
**When Donna Lynne Champlin finished singing "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" the theatre always went ballistic. People were on their feet, cheering, clapping, hollering... It was most insane at the final performance of the show. She threw every ounce into that song and belted the hell out of that last note... the whole place went nuts. I was in tears, as were a few other people around me, and the applause lasted a minute to a minute and a half. Michele (Pawk) and Linda (Lavin) even broke characters onstage to motion to DL that she deserved it. Michele was visibly moved. It was a VERY touching moment -- and totally well deserved for DL!

Chicago; Roxane/Tracy's Opening Night -- June 3, 2003
**At the end of "I Can't Do It Alone" Roxane has a signature move which no other Velma ever does. It's hers and hers alone -- and I always LOVE hearing the audiences reaction to it. Any other Velma would do a cartwheel, land and then do a split. Not Roxane! She does a cartwheel, jumps into the air, splits her legs and lands on the stage. Her opening night with Tracy, she ended the number and the whole audience collectively gasped and then began to cheer like WILD. It seemed to go on forever, and if only for that move alone, all the applause was incredibly deserved. Tracy smiled at Roxane and rasied her eyebrows as if to say "They're cheering for you". It was a wonderful moment and I'm so glad to have been there to wittness it.
