For me, definitely 'Mary Poppins'. I've seen it several times and am planning on taking my niece to see it for her birthday, but I just don't want to listen to the cast recording. I swear I'm not just in it for the flashy tricks, but it's a show I feel definitely needs the acting and the visuals to make it up to the whole.

I completely disagree. I love the score to Mary Poppins, probably mostly due to the orchestrations, and I love the recording. I prefer the music to the spectacle.

The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

42nd Street. Love the choreography and the production values, but the score just isn't that good.

Billy Elliot
Blood Brothers

Neither have stellar scores if you listen to them in isolation, but they work fine in the theatre...

Once Upon a Mattress

I had so much fun doing this show, but other than Normandy and Happily Ever After the rest of the score is pretty meh to me.
