Posted: 7/14/14 at 8:41pmI was excited with I saw the Bullets Over Broadway marquee since it's one of my favorite movies. Then I saw that Susan Stroman was directing it and I knew I probably didn't want to see it.

^ I don't know who to blame for the colossal cumulative mistake that is BULLETS OVER BROADWAY.
Had there been a different director/ choreographer than Stroman laboring with the same dreary mirthless libretto and WTF song choices, I'm not sure that the resultant show would have been any better.
Just give Stroman some great material (THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS), and look what a brilliant director she turns out to be. I think the poor BULLETS script defeated her, not the other way around.

Really? I thought Bullets Over Broadway is one of the funniest screenplays ever. Maybe it lost the magic on stage. I just didn't think Stroman's heavy-handed, over-the-top style was a good fit for a Woody Allen adaptation. I know the movie has broad moments, but the humor is all in the dialogue and its execution.

Posted: 7/14/14 at 10:10pmSusan Stroman didn't write the book, VIETgrlTerifa. That'd be Woody Allen, who made changes from the screenplay and chose the songs. I thought the production had its problems, but the biggest issue was the sour book.

Posted: 7/14/14 at 10:15pmI've never seen it, so I'll take your word for it. My friend who is a big Woody Allen fan saw it and said it was the production that made the what used to be great dialogue fall flat. He said it was way too loud and the timing was all off. I'm sure the songs being forced into the story didn't help matters.
