...it had two off-Broadway engagements staged in specially created venues under tents. The show itself was not much different than what ended up on Broadway.

My recollection of the Great Comet thing is that Off-Broadway to Broadway was nearly the same show, but the first Off-Broadway had a greater quantity of avant-garde content and less of the crowd-pleasing material. Malloy was advised to add more accessible, "hummable" material to create greater crossover potential; hence both the catchiness and the somewhat passive-aggressive lyric of the newly-added Prologue.
