Shows with two strong females?
#0Shows with two strong females?
Posted: 1/7/05 at 6:58pmI'm looking for shows with two strong female characters - one or both to be leading roles. The show would be done as a staged reading, with amateurs. Any ideas?

Posted: 1/7/05 at 7:01pmI dont know how easy it would be to get, or if you're looking for a musical or play, but Hollywood Arms has (at least) 2 very strong female roles.... 3 actually, if you count Older Helen in the 2nd act.
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...

COLLECTED STORIES by Donald Margulies.
Excellent 2 female character play.

Posted: 1/7/05 at 7:09pmI should be a little more specific - these people are going to want to do something fairly traditional and well-known.

More specific still - a musical. With a cast of 20 or so. Ensemble and such.

The characters of Rose and Giulietta in Andrew Lloyd Webber's ASPECTS OF LOVE - strong characters, both musically and histrionically speaking.
As the OCR is almost the complete show, you can get an idea of how the roles are if you can get access to the recording.

I am seriously shocked that not a single Wicklynite has suggested The Green Musical That Shall Not Be Named. Can someone check if the sky is falling?
I would recommend Aida or Chicago as well.

Chicago is my choice.
Side Show is too hard to cast (two high belters that look alike, a black man, a crazy high tenor guy, "freaks," etc.), and would not do well as a concert because it relies on the spectacle of these two girls. Yes, the gimmick of two girls belting is still there, but the show will work even less than it already does without full production values. And it's not very well-known.
Aida is also tough because of the racial casting. And if you don't have a good Aida, kiss your show goodbye.
Magic also suggested some great classics. What about Wonderful Town? Anything Goes?

Yes Side Show would definately be my choice for your request...
Aida is also good but if you want your two females to really lead the show....SIDE SHOW!!!!!

Pal Joey has four terrific female parts with a wide age range.
Anything Goes has Reno, Hope and Erma.
Little Me has young and older Belle.

"Stop Kiss" by Dianna Son, and "The Children's Hour".
For a musical, all I can think of is "Sideshow."

I'll throw my support behind Chicago and any of the classics that have been mentioned would suit you well. Here's a few more...
Once Upon a Mattress (Winnifred, Queen Aggravain, and Larken)
Passion (Fosca and Clara)
Into the Woods (The Witch, the Baker's Wife, et al)
Rags (Rebecca and Bella)
Kiss Me, Kate (Lilli and Lois)
The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Drood et al)
Baby (Lizzie, Pam, and Arlene)
She Loves Me (Amalia and Ritter)
