Upcoming musical cabaret in my life! Not A Cabaret, but a cabaret, right? Well, who has a good showtune for a young girl to sing (I'm probably going to get very little stage time, so I need one GREAT tune to sing)? I was thinking of the following, but if you have any suggestions, thank you!
my thoughts:
Seasons of Love- Rent (might need back-up singers??)
on broadway- george benson (not a girly song, but i don't need girly, i need one that'll knock their socks off!)
i'll drink to that- company
i feel pretty- west side story
thanks again!

There are some very good songs for cabaret shows.
I love "Times Like This" from Lucky Stiff
And there are so many more.....
But try to stay away from the overdones (IE Meadowlark) unless you absolutely totally have to do it or else you will die or something.

I'll Drink To That?
Do you mean "The Ladies Who Lunch?"
For a young girl to sing? No, I don't think so. And if you're thinking "Well it was funny in 'Camp'" it was only funny then because of the context of that particular scenario in the movie. The song by itself doesn't make any sense for anyone under the age of 50 to sing, otherwise, and wouldn't work for you in the show.

Yes, I accept the fact that I thought it was an amazing song ("ladies who lunch" and by the way, thank you so much for being so kind while correcting me :-/)... And the first time I heard it WAS in 'CAMP'... And who are you to tell me that I can't play a 50 year old women. I'm in an ACTING group. Have you heard of such a thing?
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions... I'm a high alto, but most songs can be prepared in differnt ranges by switching piano intervals really. And I just need ideas, I have a few more in my head. I just want to see what others come up with.

Posted: 12/6/04 at 4:46pmHonestly, I can understand you wanting to perform great songs such as Ladies Who Lunch, but give it time. Maybe look into stuff that is age-appropriate. I think the people who aren't versed in musical theatre would much enjoy something that fits who you are. Not something they would have to try and figure out why you were singing it. You may want to look into something Disney. There is a really cute song called Femininity (sp?) from Summer Magic that you could play around with. Also, you may want to look at something from the animated film Anastasia. And if you MUST do something from Broadway, you could try I Want to Go to Hollywood from Grand Hotel.

Er, mouthing off to MargoC, esp. when she responded curtly and not rudely, is not the way to go, newbie. I'm sure she's heard of acting class, as have the rest of us, but if you want to be effective in your acting class instead of looking like you're playing dress up, I wouldn't recommend Ladies Who Lunch.
I wouldn't recommend Seasons of Love because it's much better as an ensemble piece. I Feel Pretty would be fun.

Fine, Fine Line would be a good choice.
Another good one (yes, very overdone, but...) would be Wizard and I. NOT Defying Gravity.

Alize, i don't think Margo was being unkind... Margo is very well respected around here...
OOOooo, how about "I Enjoy Being A Girl" ... or is that overdone...

Posted: 12/7/04 at 4:22pmI'm sorry for "mouthing off to margo." Do you all know each other that well? Well, thank you for your suggestions. Yes, I would like to try to find something Broadway, because the theme is B'way. Disney is nice, and I'll look into those songs for reference, thanks! I wasn't, by the way, meaning that I was going to do Ladies who Lunch. This all has to be run over with a director and all anyway. I didn't know I was going to have a run-in with a highly respected Margo once I got here. I was just looking for advice (and thank you, MC!) BUT I want you to know that weather or not it meant to feel like helpful hints, I did not feel like I was getting a warm welcome. You might all think that I am a small kid who doesn't know her stuff. *click* I don't know as much as everyone, but I'm not totally outta the loop.

"Won't Say I'm in Love" from Hercules is a great song to show your voice range.
Also, try "I'm Going to Like it Here" from Flower Drum Song. This one is a bit more sweet than powerful, but it's really good when sung well.
