One of the ways we performers can give back to the community is by volunteering our time & talents to Hearts & Voices, the therapeutic arm of LifeBeat. I have been successful to a certain degree in helping to find performers go out & entertain AIDS patients. However, I have been trying to find performers who also have the repertoire & personality to sing for:
'Incarnation Children's Center: 142 Audubon Ave. btwn. 172nd & 173rd Sts. A skilled nursing facility and transitional home serving chronically and terminally ill children, ages 3 - 18, who are living with AIDS. Attendance is around 10 – 15 kids. Piano available. Open Date: Thursday, 8/19 Show time: 6 pm.'
In speaking with Leigh the Spvr at H&V today, I expressed my disappointment & frustration at not finding volunteers to trek up to this place & perform for these kids. She told me there have been Gospel, hip hop, & rapper groups performing for them, but no musical theatre or more recently cabaret performers. I hope that a performer(s) who's in or was in a child/teen appropriate show can make the effort. It is admirable to stand on a stage in front of hundreds or thousands of people to raise money for research, etc. It is also equally admirable to sing for AIDS infected people.
If there are people on this board who are singing for Hearts & Voices & I don't know about it, I applaud you. If there are performers who haven't yet & would like to volunteer either for the kids I mentioned above or for any of the other AIDS facilities (i.e., hospices, assisted living or hospitals), please call: Sameerah Luqmaan-Harris at 212-459-2590 x 109 or email her at sharris@lifebeat.org for more information.
