This has been bugging me for years! In the scene where Kathy Seldon (Debbie Ryenolds) is dubbing Lina's Lamont's (Jean Hagen)voice and is singing the song 'Would You' Debbie Ryenold's voice has actually been dubbed!! Does anyone know why?? She sings all the other songs in the movie but is dubbed for this one, which is kind of ironic - she is dubbing someone while someone is dubbing her hehe - but any suggestions?? does anyone out there know??

Debbin Reynold was only 18 or 19 when the movie was filmed, and I think that those in charge of the movie thought that her voice was fine, but it wasn't full and mature enough for the voice in the movie.

but they still let her sing all the others including 'you are my lucky star' which was cut, so it really is strange!

Not only was Debbie dubbed during her numbers in "The Dancing Cavalier," but the big fat rumor going around was that it was JEAN HAGEN that dubbed Debbie... dubbing Jean Hagen!

How is THAT for mind-blowing?

In truth, the singer for "Would You?" was Betty Noyes, at least according to the soundtrack notes on the Turner release.

EDIT: WAIT!! More trivia. Betty Noyes is the lady who sang "Baby Mine" in Disney's classic Dumbo.

This is kind of a threadjack, but it was Fred Astaire who taugh Debbie Reynolds to dance. Apparently Gene Kelly was being an a**hole and told Debbie that she couldn't dance. Fred Astaire found her crying under a piano and decided to help her.

Fred didn't teach Debbie to dance. He found her crying "under a piano" as she tells it... and allowed her to watch him rehearse (something he never did with anyone). He took her into his private studio, locked the door, and showed her how hard he worked and the mistakes he made.

He told her she had to work very hard to get what she wanted, and to go in there and DO IT. He gave her the strength she needed, and an understanding and realization of what it would take to be REALLY GOOD.

I love Singing in the Rain and I didn't notice that. I thought her voice sounded a bit odd, but I didn't think it was a different person entirely.

As I recall, that song is meant to be very operatic. Perhaps she couldn't quite acheive that kind of sound at such a young age. That's my best guess.

Dubbing was very common back then. For that particular song, they must have wanted a more warm, rich sound.

Debbie had a bright "pop" sound, and was all of 20 years old. She had just come off of a big (surprise) hit record with Abba-Dabba Honeymoon.

By dubbing her for this one song, it gave "Would You?" a more legit sound (for a female crooner of the early '50s.)

Today... I agree, it sounds kinda weird when you listen for it.

They dubbed bits and pieces of other singers in other films. You'd be surprised. Not long ago, there was a thread talking about how Rita Moreno was dubbed for some (not all) of her West Side Story songs.

EDIT: And Vera-Ellen and Cyd Charisse were dubbed for their whole MGM careers!

Of course, Moreno was also dubbed for THE KING AND I.

She was also dubbed in West Side Story for "A Boy Like That", because it was out of her range. She did sing "America" and "Quintet" herself.

it was JEAN HAGEN that dubbed Debbie... dubbing Jean Hagen!

That's actually true. Jean Hagen didn't dub her singing (that was Betty Noyes) but she did dub her own speaking lines in The Dancing Cavalier. ("Pierre, nothing can keep us apart...")
