Ok... I was recently visiting NYC and was looking for a show that would be interesting. And given the fact that I had seen most of the shows I decided to go to Sly Fox, and i have to say I am glad I did. I know that it isn't doing too well, but people should really get out and see this before it eventually closes. It has a great cast, and kept me laughing throughout the show.
Does anybody else have a opinion on this show???
Anyways, see it while it is still there!

They are not the happiest to do the whole "fan" thing, such as Kristin Chenoweth and other broadway stars, but they will do it if you are polite and non-obtrusive.

Hello, HM,
I really enjoyed SLY FOX, too. I saw it during its Boston tryout, and I understand that the cast has gotten even crazier since then. While I found myself almost feeling guilty for laughing at many of the politically incorrect jokes, the cast is irresistible. They make it work, despite a script that is a little tired by today's standards. You can almost hear the rim shots!
I think the reason it dipped last week was that Richard Dreyfuss was out sick. Too bad, because I'll bet Rene Auberjonois was great stepping in as Sly. He was amazing as Jethro Crouch and was robbed of a Tony nomination. While Dreyfuss is, of course, the main draw, he is not the only reason to see SLY FOX.
You can check out my complete review in the show section. It's titled, "Nimble Cast Lifts SLY FOX."
Cheers

Loved this show! Bronson Pinchot, and Peter Scolari, just steal the court room scene. Professor Irwin, s just wonderful. Folks if you haven't yet caught this one - get to the Ethel Barrymore!

Saw the original with George C. Scott. Actually, I found this one a WHOLE lot funnier.
Just my opinion, I may be wrong.

Posted: 7/14/04 at 2:00pmI can't wait to see it on August 14th. The box office told me Dreyfuss is leaving on the 15th to go to England. I am surprised you said he was not too approachable. I guess these stars do get mobbed. There was a story in the paper that he was caught at some topless bar in New York. The gals did not even know who he was. He is one of the reasons I am seeing the show although the whole cast is great.

Posted: 7/14/04 at 2:10pmlet me put it this way, most of the cast will sneak out a back door or leave almostright after the show in order to avoid fans, I did catch him before the show as he left after a matinee for a "date". I was also told that sometimes they even leave with the audience....look for people in hats, easy way to distinguish actors, because no theatre goer wears a hat.

Thats for sure. They all wear the baseball hats pulled down over their eyes. Like we don't know its them.

Just to add a different viewpoint - myself and our small group did not enjoy it at all when we saw it in April - one of us even fell asleep. Humor seemed dated and forced, and none of us really bought Richard in his role. Eric was completely unengaged, and the whole courtroom scene came across as an attempt by the secondary players to steal moments in a piece they were not committed to in the overall. However, we all really liked the set.
There are no words for Elizabeth - we felt sorry for her.
As I said, just the other side of the coin.

I cannot disagree with you on that, in fact in many ways it is all too true. But nobody said it was recent material, and with that many incredible people on stage I think most can forgive some of the lacking aspects.
thanx,

I just saw this again at todays matinee, and it has really grown and become much more fun.
Rene Auberjoinoi (sp?) went on for Richard Dreyfuss, and infused the play with a lot of energy, he really romps through it. There were also, I think, many ad-libs. At one point today a giant piece of wood broke off the set, obviously a huge and dangerous mistake, and Eric Stolz walked over and picked it up, saying " these darn San Francisco earthquakes!" before throwing the big piece of wood out the window.
Rachel York is lovely as ever, although I kept waiting for her to burst into song.
And the courtroom was wonderuflly silly and out of control too. I loved it, and would recommend it to anyone who likes a big silly laugh.
