This has been rumored here and there. I came across this today when I did a search. Today's news in little Midland, Texas:

Sounds like it'll be great

wait, it says that the person directing is 20 years old? And then Betty goes on to talk about it, so I guess it's not a misprint. Eeek, 20? That's kind of cool though. More power to Mr. Tony Georges, whoever you are.

Being in Texas I really want to see this, and I hope I can find the time, because it conflicts with the musical I'm in right now, but I REALLY WANT TO SEE IT!!!!!!

Indeed, the question here is -- who is Tony George? Directing GYPSY with Maria Friedman, and Betty Buckley in Sweeney at 20? Though clearly he is the brainstorm behind this theatre. Where is the money coming from? Is he a trust fund baby?

apparently he's quite opposite of a trust fund baby:

This article says he grew up in a trailor park. so, how did he get where he is now?

"Accompanied by her mother....Betty Bob Buckley." And that's why I love the South.

Or really smart business savvy. That article says he was able to incite investors to raise 2 million dollars to pay for the summer series (4 shows). That's pretty amazing. Hopefully he'll have the artistic vision to be able to make these productions as great as his casts.

I also hope the shows find an audience. This is their "inaugural" season, I doubt he'll be able to pull together that kind of money next year if the shows play to empty houses. Great story. I definitely wish them all the best of luck.

Where ARE they getting an audience? The town is so small and the theate seats 1000 according to the people in the box office. Out of curiosty, I called the box office to ask if I could still get tickets to the evening performance of Beauty and the Beast tonigh, and they said that there were only a few seats left on the far back sides. So, people are coming, whoever they are.

Does the theatre even have a website?

Odessa is a Texas town of about 92,000 people. I'm origianlly from a Southern town smaller than that, and the local theatre there never had trouble filling a venue that seated 700 people. Who says theatre is dead?
