I am looking to direct a show at a college but it needs to have a fairly small cast (under 10 people). Are there any really good choices?

Thanks

Play or Musical?

Into The Woods. I think the original cast had...14 people i think but that also included small parts like Cinderella's father and the steward...does it NEED to be under 10 people? Into The Woods is amazing.

Moby Dick: The Musical (lol) can be done with a large cast or a small cast. i'm currently doing it in a cast of only 12, i'm sure it can be adjusted to 10.

For plays...just about anything written by David Ives. Sure Thing, Mystery at Twicknam Vicarage...many others. All hilarious, all written for about 2-6 people.

My school recently did a one-act play called "Booby Trap" (formerly called "Booby in the Trap"). It has one main character with a few others popping in and out.
Also, Proof is quite good.
Synopsis/ production info

"`I grow old... I grow old... I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.` What does that mean, Mr. Marlowe?" "Not a bloody thing. It just sounds good." He smiled. "That is from the `Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.` Here's another one. `In the room women come and go/Talking of Michael Angelo.' Does that suggest anything to you, sir?" "Yeah -- it suggests to me that the guy didn't know very much about women." "My sentiments exactly, sir. Nonetheless I admire T. S. Eliot very much." "Did you say, 'nonetheless'?" - The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler

Christopher Durang's 'denity Crisis ( if I recall correctly, 3 women, 3 men but you need some pretty strong actors)

"Clue, The Musical"- Not a great script, but fabulous songs and only needs about 7 people and no choregraphy is necessary if you aren't able (but you need an actor with an incredible memory and great talent to play Mr. Boddy, and a piano player who is willing to actually have lines)

Blithe Spirit- 2 men, 5 women, incredibly fun show to do (and if using grey for the ghosts doesn't work, try using glitter/shimmer. We did and it was fabulous).

Two By Two- 4 men, 4 women. Some potential set challenges, but all-in-all a fun show. Good music (if you're in a religiously conservative area, might not be the best idea, though. We got some hate mail when I did this in college).

"The World of Carl Sandburg" (I think that's the title)- Flexible gender distribution, not a "musical" but need a couple of singers and at leat one who plays guitar. Retrospctive of the poet's work. Good challenges for actors, a bit weird for audiences, but still fun to do.

"Talk to Me Like the Rain..."- Tennessee Williams. A "10-minute one-act" in the "27 Wagonloads of Cotton" compilation. 1 man, 1 woman. Beautifully written And this is from someone who usually hates TN Williams), but can be hard to act with the wrong partner. The woman has a seriously long speech to memorize at the end of the show.

Those are my first thoughts. I'm sure I can think of others, if given the time.

Carpe Noctem, y'all ;-P

"Romance/Romance" is a cast of 4, I think. I don't *think* "Is there Life After High School" has a big cast, but I don't know it well enough to say for sure.

Nunsense has a small cast I think. And it's hilarious.

Oh God. Don't listen to Jess925. Do not do Moby Dick the musical, everyone will hate it.

You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown is good.

another vote for Charlie Brown, its the classic small-cast musical. for plays, anything by Tennessee Williams is ideal. or you could do what we did, we did about 4 or 5 of the one-acts from 27 wagonloads of cotton. those are all great. the lady of larkspur lotion is my favorite, it has 3 people in it. the long goodbye is another, it has about 4 or 5. and its probably the longest one in there, could probably stand on its own as a short play.

you may know what you need but to get what you want better see that you keep what you have

Not sure but isn't Godspell a fairly small cast,
and Once on this Island can be done with few people as well
the original only had 11 people in it
