Smokehouse... the Musical, is a period piece written as a tribute to NY composer Bob McDowell, 1952-2005. Set in 1860's Oklahoma, it attacks many of today's taboo issues while drawing upon the highly entertaining style of alternative rockin' blues, and country music. More to the point, it's writer and lyricist, Diz Struffles, is a survivor of horrendous childhood abuses, and brings them to the stage with humor and horror, while challenging peoples misinterpretation of biblical sodomy; penetrating homophobia; and exposing pediophilea. All-told, to help prevent victims of abuse from falling into the all-to-common paths of substance abuse, addiction, phobias, homelessness, and worse; becoming abusers themselves. "Not all victims live to become survivors." "They have to talk about it, and see that they are not alone."
What makes him and his show even more interesting was his choice to leave NYC to tour America in 2006 with John Legend, The Marshall Tucker Band, Curtis Alan, and others, while pitching Smokehouse... to investors, producers, and moguls. He has ended up up in Nashville, TN, to record and continue pitching Smokehouse... only to find six out of the ten people he's worked with are victims of abuse themselves, as well as a host of colorful problems, and situations. Yet, despite his pending eviction, troubled marriage, threats against his life, band complications, and near-penniless state, he continues to bring great music, for a greater cause, to where-ever it's needed. It is a 23 song, 72 page Musical seeking a producer. The music is co-written by Broadway performer Brent Moyer, and the West Ends, Stan Stanley. Costumes by Bon Jovi's & Inxs's, Jennifer Blanchard & Lynne Bugai. Smokehouse... has it all; sex, horror, violence, love, passion, truth, and it's for a good cause.
