For anyone interested, Someone in a Tree from PACIFIC OVERTURES is posted on youtube with the original cast (it is legal). It's terrific (and Please Hello is there as well). I've never seen or heard Pacific Overtures, but this song is marvelous.

It's one of those addictive Sondheim songs that flows SO well and I think both the original and revival had it done perfectly. I prefer the original recording, but even the revival has a great orchestration that sounds very similar.
What a cool video. I'm glad it's on there.
I do have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Sondheim that its his favorite song he's written. While I think it's good...I think it's far from his best.
I freaking love 'Someone In a Tree'. One of my favorite Sondheim songs. It expresses that moment SO specifically, and yet is so universal. All of history can be explained with 'Someone in a Tree'.
I always considered Someone in a Tree to be a 'mini-masterpiece'. It was thoroughly engaging in both casts. I always felt it worked during the show and when standing on it's own. I've only seen it 4x, 3x live, but I replayed it and enjoyed it endlessly (ditto, A Weekend in the Counrty).
A Weekend in the Country is probably my favorite Sondheim song/scene, but Someone in a Tree would definitely be second. Perfection in every way.
