Julie Andrews declined her Tony nomination for Victor/Victoria because the show itself wasn't nominated for Best Musical. She was still nominated, but Donna Murphy took home the Tony that year for Leading Actress in King and I.

Julie recieved the only nomination for V/V.
She felt that her show was 'egregiously overlooked'
*hope I spelled that right*

She did not appear at the awards that year and tried to decline the nomination. None of this mattered in the end since Donna Murphy won for "The King and I."

I once saw a clip that I guess had been taken from the wings of Andrews in front of an audience saying something about that she couldn't accept the nomination or something, i think i saw it on CNN when she was on with LARRY KING LIVE. does anyone else remember that?

Wasn't she also nominated for the same role for an Oscar? What happened then? I know she didn't win that either, granted she already won for Mary Poppins.

I wanted to see her win so bad. I wanted to see the fight between her and the Tony Awards.

TA: Here's your award.
JA: No thank you. I'm boycotting.
TA: But we've already engraved your name on it.
JA: You can stuff your award up your patooty.

Actually...the look on Donna Murphy's face when they announced her name was priceless. I don't think anyone expected anyone other than Julie Andrews to win that award.

Gotham, that was one of those movie moments where if I had water in my mouth, I would have spit it out laughing. re: Someone please explain this TONY AWARD question...

No, it was totally obvious that Donna Murphy would win. Are you really going to give an award to or even vote for someone who declined the nomination? I sure wouldn't.

A little more info on the situation. Rent and Noise/Funk were both nominated for Best Musical. V/V and Big were the only other new musicals that season that were still running at the Tony deadline. What typically happens in a case like that would be Best Musical nominations for them too. But instead the committee nominated Swinging on a Star, a modest revue which had already closed, and Chronical of a Death Foretold, an experimental piece that had a brief run and was long forgotten. On top on that V/V received no nominations aside from Julie's. There was a strong feeling that the committee was trying to make some kind of statement, so Julie Andrews refused her nomination.
