Sondheim Quote for the Young People

There's a great interview with Stephen Sondheim in today's ( 8/28 ) NYTimes, it's SIMPLE and EASY to sign up and get access. Sondheim is curating the Telluride Film Festival and had this to say about theater and movies:

"I am always stunned when anybody under 50 knows what I do. Because the theater is, as we say, not the province of young people. Movies are."

He's right, as usual.

Of course those of us under 50 know who Sondheim is. He wrote those cool songs for Madonna in "Dick Tracy".

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

He does have a valid point to raise. Todays theater goers are getting older and older.
This is one of the reasons why I was so heavily involved in Children's Theater.
If we could get one small kid to be in awe of the whole process and then learn and nurture that, we have ourselves another theater goer.

Was that the one starring that woman who the totally hip (gag)Britney and Christina are rumored to be saluting tonight on the MTV Awards?

Madonna was the woman who had to perform "Like A Virgin" every night from memory.

i saw my first broadway show when i was 4 and my first regional show when i was 2 or maybe younger. i was in my first show when i was 4. not all young people are into movies and not theatre. i do happen to perfer plays over musicals. but anyone who says a play is not theatre it not a real theatre person.
One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art-Oscar Wilde
