Sondheim Shows Frozen

One of the local community theatres in my area was planning on doing Into the Woods this winter as one of their shows, and they thought they'd had all their paperwork in in June. However, it turend out not to be so, and when they reapplied this week, they were told that not only were the rights to Into the Woods frozen, but so were all other Sondheim shows.
Now, i'm not sure if this is true or not (i have no real reason to suspect the theatre group lied or was lied to), which begs the question: Why are all of Sondheim's shows frozen? Does anyone know?

Probably 'cause Sweeney Todd is still playing in New York. Plus the Ravinia Festival and everything. That could be the reason. And also because of the Sweeney Todd movie. I really don't know.

I have a lot of trouble investing much credibility towards that notion. Sondheim shows such as "Forum" "Into The Woods" and "Company" are staples of many theatre groups and to freeze them would make very little economic sense.
It also depends where you theatre is located.

Posted: 8/18/06 at 5:49pmNO that normally wouldn't happen. 1 Show in production does not restrict the rights to the entire canon. The only way I could see that happening is if u lived outside a city that's doing a Sondheim festival (a la Kennedy Center).

deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

Posted: 8/18/06 at 6:50pmYou live in the Seattle area Arykahmarye, right? The 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle has exclusive rights to all of Sondheim's shows, thus preventing anyone from doing them without special permission.
