Patinkin is doing the Tempest early this fall. That is why he was sporting the beard. Surprised to see and hear so many people asking this question when it is common knowledge he is doing the play.
As for Sondheim not being at the TONYs had the committee bothered to let him know far enough in advance, he might have been able to be there. As it was he was in Europe and unable to attend.
