Ravinia is a venue in the Chicago area that does concerts and shows - they've been staging Sondheim shows the past few years in honor of his 75th birthday (I think they did Passion, Sunday, Sweeney, and A Little Night Music previously). This is supposed to be the last year, but they're talking about possibly extending it for a few more years. God I hope so.
If you want to check out their site, it's http://www.ravinia.org :)

Ravinia is one of the loveliest venues I've ever seen-acres of park land and a bandshell, with the music piped through out the grounds. It was built around the turn of the century as an attraction to get people to take the train north of Chicago. Therefore, the Metra commuter train stops IN the park only a few hundred feet from the bandshell. Listening to the train go through every hour is part of the charm.
It is the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, causing more than one guest conductor to remark that it's the only train station in the world with it's own symphony orcehstra.
Pavillion tickets are usually pricey, but you can usually get a lawn ticket for about $10 and picnic all day.
Ravinia is lovely.
It's about an hour from downtown Chicago.
The area is called Highland Park.
I believe Joel's family lived there in Risky Business.
SITPWG was quite beautiful (meeting Patti LuPone backstage even better) last year and I am looking forward to ANYONE CAN WHISTLE this summer. :) I always think of Lee Remick when I see the title ACW. :)
Some of the best late-summer days I've had:
Early train to Ravinia for a leisurely picnic on the beautiful grounds;
Cerveris, LuPone and McDonald singing Sondheim in the fragrant evening air (definitely pop for Pavilion tix);
Then back to Sidetrack for showtunes and a nightcap!
I've said it before, Chicago is a great town for a theatre weekend; I hope everybody got their Finn Festival tickets.
Sidetrack is fun!
Love it! The original Splash. But what NY'er doesn't love hisself some farm boyz? Whee-haw.
I'm sure you'll see KMF there, Glebby...
*marks calendar* I can't wait!
Will I see you Cookie?
I didn't even think about going... But it would be just one of other reasons to visit the great city of Chicago.....
Hugo's Frog Bar being the other. :)
KMF already has his tickets set aside!!! I think Cookie should come!
I actually preferred the Passion concert over the Sunday concert. I hope Jarico will get to see the concert this year. Last year, I had to go to the Sunday concert alone.

Hmmmmmmm...... two of my best friends in the world just moved to Chicago a few months ago and are dying for me to visit. I guess this is a no brainer -- seeya in Chicago in August!
It is funny you posted this because just last night I ran into a friend that works at Ravinia and she asked me, "What day do you want to see Anyone Can Whistle?" Just so you all know they are only doing TWO performances this year. In the past they have done three. So tickets may be a bit harder to come by.
