Just learned about this:
"Song and Dnce" Starring Louise Pitre, Rex Harrington and Evelyn Hart opening May 9th for 3 wks @ the newly renovated Danforth Dance Hall. Choreographed by Wayne Sleep, Directed by Trudy Moffat
Louise of course needs no intro but Evelyn Hart and Rex Harrinton while no longer in their 1st youth as dancers have always been personal favs of mine for both technique, grace and artistry. Could be interesting.

I think the whole thing sounds very dated. Song and Dance was never a particularly strong work and as much as I like Louise Pitre she is no Bernadette Peters who originally made it a lukewarm success in North America. And that Music Hall Theatre on the Danforth has always been IMHO a white elephant. The last thing I saw there was Vagina Monologues a few years ago and remember it as being an uninviting movie house converted into an even more uninviting theatre.

Posted: 4/27/06 at 9:19pmI believe they have put a lot o bucks into refurbishing the theatre which was a flea pit. This show could work well here . I agree this is a "slight" story but the one act song, one act dance has always intrigued me (original choreograph was Peter Martins) and I truly LOVE Evelyn Hart and Sexy Rexy. Wayne Sleep is no slouch either I remember him from an old English TV series "The Hot Shoe SHow. In cred talented. I will certainly go

The Song and Dance revival in Toronto attracted some predictably negative reviews from the Star and Globe when it opened Tuesday night, however it also was unfortunate for the fact that star and ex-National Ballet great Rex Harrington injured himself that same night mid-way through the show and has to be replaced for the rest of the run. His injury was to his Achilles tendon which required surgery and which will require him to be a cast for the next four weeks.

Does anybody know which version of the "Song" they are doing? Are they using any of the new songs (and new plot) from the Denise Van Outen "Tell Me on a Sunday," or reverting to the old Bernadette Peters version?
(Just curious.)

DAMN! I was unable to go to the opening night (I had another show that night) and the first free slot I had this week was tomorrow's (Sat May 13) matinee! I herad the Rex injured himself about 10 minutes from the end and crawled off the stage in pain. But NO ONE at the theatre has contacted me to say he would not be performing the rest of the run.
How awful for him. I know he has been wanting to do more musicals since he appeared as the wizard in the panto ROBIN HOOD a few years ago. (He sng "Anything you can do" in that with a pleasant though unremarkable voice.)
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
