I just think that there is something really important happening during "Wait" that I can't stand to see it get cut. Not only does it contain some of Sondheim's more clever lyrics, but the way it juxtaposes her advice with her thoughts on decorating the shop, and the way she takes away the razor right on "nothing like a nice bowl a gillies" just gives me goosebumps.
I guess it's not an essential song, although Mrs. Lovett's character could be stronger WITH it. That's the one sad thing here, is I see the need to cut the unessential, but it's so much better with everything intact...

Posted: 8/14/07 at 4:39pmI fully accept that this is not a film record of the musical. My concern is the more the Sondheim aspects are eliminated, the more likely this is to be Tim Burton's Sweeney and not Sondheim's. At which point, why bother doing it as a musical at all when Burton could have done it as a straight horror movie with all of his favorite actors/camera tricks/design elements? What Sondheim does with his music is add subtlety and humanity - take enough of that away, and it is just another graphic novel.

Posted: 8/14/07 at 5:31pmwell I cangt back this up but wasnt there an interview with JOhnny Dep where he discussed sweeney and said something about "today i sang to my razors" or something? I almost positive. I didnt mean I had proof that the song wasnt cut but I suspect its there only minus one verse...

I don't think anyone's suggested it in this thread, but do you think Sondheim will "ADD" a new song...you know...to be eligible for an Oscar (even though he's already got one for Dick Tracey). It seems that most musical transformations to film seem to add a tune or two, even if it's just for the credits, in order for Oscar eligibility (for example, 'You Must Love Me' from Evita).
I don't mind them making cuts to make it a better movie...I just hope they're very careful. Sondheim's work (especially Sweeney) is so complete the way it is. We shall see. This is by far my favorite musical, so I'm excited and scared at the same time.

From this very message board:
"going a little away from this thread's general feel, but had to share a little personal excitement.
they're still working things, because i've been doing some of the recording work on it (mostly oohs and ahhs, no words as per bloody usual!. it would have been a really dull session apart from - i got to hear johnny sing a snatch of 'my friends"! gave me goosebumps. a little 'captain jack sings sondheim". but i think it'll really work. any other kind of voice coming out of him would look and sound wrong."

For no good reason, that mildly reassures me.
I know it will never happen, but in the 1 in 1000 shot "By the Sea" is kept in, I would love to see it as a goofy fantasy sequence in Lovett's mind. Like completely cut to her and Sweeney skipping through sand dunes with Disney-esque sea animals nearby frolicking.
Or maybe that's my cold medication talking.

"...even if it's just for the credits, in order for Oscar eligibility (for example, 'You Must Love Me' from Evita)."
"You Must Love Me" was actually used in the film, not during the credits.

Unless the cast can somehow appear in thousands of theatres across the country - world, even - at the same time and perform this piece live, we will be getting a movie.
Note: I believe Alan Rickman is the only person capable of such a feat.
Incorrect.
Drew Sarich has been practising VERY VERY hard. But Rickman is certainly the only 'Sweeney' movie cast member who can do it.
