Sound Design in Theatre

Ok time for another "deep" question. What is everyone's thoughts on sound design in theatre? I know it varies from production to production and also whether it is a play or musical, but how does everyone (especially the older members of the board) feel about its presence and growing use in modern theatre? Is it ruining theatre, or enhancing it as technology improves as in stage design and lighting? I know there are many sub-issues in sound design including the clutter in radio frequencies today with a growing need for wireless communication which is starting to affect wireless microphones. This is something I have taken an interest in lately, and about which I have been reading and was interested in everyone's thoughts.
