I just got back from a screening of the restored 70MM version of "South Pacific" at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco. There is one more showing tonight for those who may be in the area and interested in the film. It looked and sounded very crisp but oh how I hate the tints they used in the songs. Too bad they couldn't get rid of those and put the correct colors back.
(P.S. They are showing the restored 70MM "Cleopatra" on Monday.)

Unfortunately, my understanding is that these (disturbing) "tints" were done with colored lenses and lens filters, not by treating the footage AFTER it was shot.
So that means they can't get rid of it, sadly.
It was shot that way. If it had been shot "normal" and then treated with tinting and color enhancement afterwards, it might be possible to find an untreated negative and "redo" it. I doubt that will ever happen, considering the way it was executed.
Poor Josh Logan. He was really "losing it" while he was making this film.

Posted: 8/20/06 at 12:24amI'm sorry, but when I think of this film, the only thing that comes to mind is 'ICK'. And it really has very little to do with the color.
