Are there any other Southerners out there who are constantly annoyed by poor Southern accents in plays and movies? I really don't know who is coaching some of these actors.

You don't have to be Southern to be annoyed by bad Southern accents!

I've never heard anyone in my life say "Ya'll come back na ya' here!" unless it was in some satiric entertainment

You do have to be Southern to be offended. By the way, how do Richardson and Lange sound in the two Williams plays?

Lange is passable. Her accept was much better when she did STREETCAR.

Richardson's is perfect. Very Southern aristocratic.

I'm not from the south but the really cheesy, stereotypical southern accents irk me quite a bit. In some cases, it's pretty much mocking a culture. Just like politically incorrect chinese accents or what have you.

Part of the problem is actors/coaches don't seem to know that there are many different types of a Southern accents. The majority of Southerners do not have a thick accent. Also, the genteel accent of Vivien Leigh in Gone With the Wind and Streetcar virtually no longer exsists. The dialect as a whole is rapidly disappearing. Having lived in Memphis for 20 years and now living in Savannah, GA, I more often notice the absence of a strong accent than a very noticeable one.

Dreamcatcher, I could not agree more. I believe you have just articulated the way all Southerners feel about this subject.
