You do have to be Southern to be offended. By the way, how do Richardson and Lange sound in the two Williams plays?

as someone raised in the south, i definitley notice it...a LOT. although i myself, do not have a thick accent, i know i can do better.
don't know who is coaching them...

Lange is passable. Her accept was much better when she did STREETCAR.
Richardson's is perfect. Very Southern aristocratic.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:23pmI'm not from the south but the really cheesy, stereotypical southern accents irk me quite a bit. In some cases, it's pretty much mocking a culture. Just like politically incorrect chinese accents or what have you.

Part of the problem is actors/coaches don't seem to know that there are many different types of a Southern accents. The majority of Southerners do not have a thick accent. Also, the genteel accent of Vivien Leigh in Gone With the Wind and Streetcar virtually no longer exsists. The dialect as a whole is rapidly disappearing. Having lived in Memphis for 20 years and now living in Savannah, GA, I more often notice the absence of a strong accent than a very noticeable one.
