I've seen it- I'm starting to feel like the unofficial shill for this show, but I've seen it, loved it, and mention it in every "what should I see Off Broadway" thread that comes up. :) Seriously, it really is that good.

Although I don't know, what with Rapp if that means that it's going to turn into a crowd of tween RENTheads (?), then I am a little worried what that experience will be like.

eta- this is what I posted on another board about it:

I went to SG with a friend who knew almost nothing about the man (very much so almost nothing, in that I had to explain while we were sitting in the house, before the start of the show, that Gray is actually no longer with us), and when the lights came back up at the end of the show we both turned to each other and went "wow- I would so see that again right now."

The show is a reading of his works, as done by five... personalities, I guess? Five aspects of his life. Love, Adventure, Journals, Family, and Career (Career is the guest star position, was played by Fisher Stevens when I saw it) read and act and reenact Gray's life onstage.

While they are his words that are being said, no one on the stage looks like Gray, or is trying to 'be' him, and so it becomes where Gray is everyone, regardless of gender, race, age...

It's hilarious and heartbreaking and physical comedy and devastating and everything else that his life was (from what I know of it) all at once, and where the idea in theory sounds like it could have been or become so much bad camp (a show about Gray, but without Gray, but using his words, but with these different parts of him, like the characters on that tv show "Herman's Head," etc.), the show really does make the idea work.

And so you should go see it. The end. :)
