I'm putting together a musical revue for a local high school next January focusing on the rennaisance of musical comedy. They'll have some sections from The Full Monty, Avenue Q, Urinetown, the Producers, Hairspray, and a few other shows. Two of those shows are DRS and Spamalot. I saw DRS in its San Diego tryout so I'm familiar enough with the show to plot out what they might use from it, but I haven't gotten to New York to see Spamalot yet and I'm trying to get a tentative script to them by the end of the month. I was wondering what you guys might suggest as far as a few songs that could be done as a medley suggestive of the plot of the show or any standout numbers that might be great openers/closers.

The "You Can't Succeed on Broadway" segment. It's really the only remotely funny part.

I agree. The "hay!" line was one of the only things I thought was remotely funny all night.

Ok, I'm guessing based on your responses that I'd probably be better off planning an isolated number from the show, rather than a short medley. Thanks for the heads up.

Well, I mean, there are a lot of things from the show you could do...but where you'd get the sheet music and permission to perform them from at this point might be tough. Personally, I'd use "The Song that goes like this"/"I'm not dead yet"/and/or "You won't succeed on Broadway" - though I laughed my tail off the entire show long.:)

Spamalot Highlights? ...It ended.

I was so excited about the show, love Monty Python and it seemed so like something I'd love. There were some good points, Sara and Christian had there moments, and I guess the David Hyde Pierce number mentioned here.

This revue won't be performed until next January, but their school year will be ended soon, so I wanted to get a draft together of what they might perform. The sheet music and CD and such will be all be out by then, so it's now just a matter of what to tentatively put into the revue. Thanks a ton for your help.

smartpenguin--you totally stole my line. For me the highlight of the show was when it was over. Actually, the highlight was when Tim Curry came onstage and we all went nuts. It was all downhill from there. I love Monty Python, but this show was definitely a disappointment.

I was so looking forward to it and the build was so great, there was Curry and we were so excited and then it fell apart. Still I really believe it... it ended there's the highlight.

"You Won't Succeed on Broadway" is definitely my favorite number. You have to use that one...

I'd go with a combo of a couple group numbers... people already mentioned "I'm Not Dead Yet" and "You Won't Succeed on Broadway"... maybe if you're looking for something you can tentatively show them NOW, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life." The music HAS to be out there somewhere already since it's from 'Life of Brian'.

I really liked Sara's song "What Happened To My Part?" She was by far the best thing about the show, although I did find the rest of it funny, too. A great majority of the show is Monty Python in-jokes. Not worth the money to sit up front, but for the $45 I paid for my seat in the back, I had an awesome time. And yes, "Always Look On the Bright Side of Life" is a must.
