I saw Spamalot last night for the first time. What a great show. As a python fan, I must say that I was very pleased. I had partial view seats so I missed some entrances and soem of the back of the stage, but I still saw most of the show and was pleased with my seat. The cast is terrific (David Hyde Pierce, Hank Azaria, and Tim Curry are great, especially Hank and David in various roels throughout the show. Chris Sieber is good and Christian Borle is a stand-out, especially in his final character.)
There was some problem with the fake head used in the decapitation seen involving the killer rabbit. When the rabbit was being explained by Hank Azaria's character, the head fell off prematurely and they couldn't get it back on. So the actor just kinda held it and the second the rabbit jumped on him his head fell of and he died. Hank Azaria said "well that usually goes smoother" and the whole cast burst out laughing. Thjey pulled it togetehr quickly though and the show continued.
I think this show is great, but I wonder how it will play to people who aren't Python fans. I mean, there was thunderous applause when certain characters/things appeared onstage (before they even did anything). You could tell these were people who (like me) have watched the movie a lot and were lookign for specific things in the show. I wonder if it will be able to pull in an audience of people who haven't seen the movie?

Posted: 2/22/05 at 10:32pmI forgot to add that Sara Ramirez was out last night. Her understudy, Darlene Wilson, was on instead. I didn't really care for her too much. I don't know. I was kinda underwhelmed. Maybe I would've liked Ramirez better, but the part really didn't have any impact on me at all and the "diva's lament" really fell flat for me. It took me way out of the moment in the show and wasn't really that funny. Just my opinion. I would lvoe to hear other people's take on Sara in the role.

just got in from Spamalot tonight second time first row center tonight
Its wonderful I saw it on Saturday matinee with Sara Ramirez and must say she was incredible as the DIVA Darlene was good but not Sara Sara had a presence and a very huge voice and a special sensuality that makes her fit the role better
The show seems to be getting tweaked . I thought one of the duets was cut a chorus or two
Tonight the knight who gets his arms cut off and his legs only had hands and one leg cut there was a small problem with the second leg falling but it didnt matter
Tim Curry was talking with the audience member and said how glad he was to be in Chicago then he corrected it to NYC the show is so much fun
I am not a Monty Python fan I dont think I have seen the movie even once and I will say that the show is wonderful I can only imagine if I knew some of the "in jokes" from Monty Python I enjoyed the cast and the musical numbers It will run for years
Go get your tickets now They wont be there after it opens
