Spamalot review 5/6 not worth the hype!

Tonight I did standing room for Spamalot and while I was entertained, thought it was fun and smart, it is not worth all the hype it has recieved. Also, if I paid $100 for a ticket I would want some money back. Tim Curry was out tonight so maybe that made it a little different, BUT the understudy was great. I just think that sometimes it laged on, and there were points where I felt like the cast was waiting for us to laugh...and the audience didn't.
I loved the show, but Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is the best one of this season though. If you have not seen Spamalot yet, get your tickets but consider standing room. Its cheap, and the show is short so you dont really stand too long.
PS: HANK AZARIA IS AMAZING!!!

I'm sorry the audience you were in didn't laugh. I thought one of the best things about the show was sharing it with other Monty Python fans who were laughing before the jokes happened and then even harder when they did, and harder still when that Pythonic energy was transferred into other jokes. I highly endorse the show. I think it's fantastic and pure entertainment. The projections are pretty amazing as well. Very clever.
Not that anyone asked, but my favorite part of the whole experience was during the French Taunters, a good half of the audience said "Your mother was a hampster and your father smelt of elderberries" along with Hank Azaria. That and singing "Bright Side of Life" with the cast at the end. If you're a Python fan, it's a great experience. That's all! :)

Posted: 5/7/05 at 4:35amLike I said, the experience of the show was better than the show itself. I saw it with my little brother and we nudged each other the whole time... We made other jokes about the ones going on onstage... the experience itself was worth the money paid for the ticket.

Posted: 5/7/05 at 9:51amThis was just the case when I saw Producers after waiting months for tickets and selling my lungs on ebay. In the end, I thought it was cute and funny. But it was not worth all the hype. Not by a long shot.

Posted: 5/7/05 at 10:19amAs someone who adores everything about Spamalot, I have to say that I have seen it both with and without Tim Curry and noticed no difference in the audience reactions. Yes, part of the greatness of the experience is being there with other Python fans and hearing them laugh just as loud as I am. I think it could be harder to love it if you're not a Python fan but I will say that while I did love DRS, I laughed a lot more during Spamalot. Usually I don't like all the "hyped" musicals (ie I hated both The Producers and Hairspray) but I think Spamalot is fantastic.

Posted: 5/8/05 at 2:43amTo get standing room tickets I got there at 8am on the friday. There were 7 people in front of me, the earliest people got there was 7am. I think if you are there by 7:30 you are ok. BUT, on a weekend I would say 7am.

That's an interesting way to put it.

Posted: 5/8/05 at 5:57amI think, had I not been a huge Monty Python fan... had I not been sitting there with my brother... had I not been surrounded by hundreds of other MP fans... the show would not have been so exciting and fun for me. I mean really, it's kind of gaudy, sparkly, "Pop Broadway" mediocrity... like most of what's on Broadway as far as musicals go right now... but the experience of it was amazing. I think that's what I mean anyway... too early in the morning to tell really... :P

Posted: 5/8/05 at 10:17amDoes anyone know what's going on with Tim? Has he been sick? I read he's missed several shows this week. Hope he's o.k.

I know he's been ill (someone I know went to one of the performances he missed, and that's what she was told at the theatre). Don't know what the illness is, however.
I too hope he'll recover quickly. He is not a performer who takes missing shows lightly - he goes on if it's at all possible to do so.
