Re: Have the actors put down their instruments when the Nicolson's win the pools and say "Hey, we can afford an orchestra now!"

They may well be able to afford an orchestra they just don't have the sufficient space for one - The Watermill is tiny!

The Watermill is not easy to get to without a car - but not impossible. Newbury is easily accessible from London by train and you can get a taxi from the train station to the theatre. Although it can be a pain to get to, it is more than worth the effort. It's a fabulous space for intimate theatre and the three shows I've seen there have all been outstanding (Hot Mikado, Martin Guerre & Sunset Boulevard).

Btw - the Craig Revel Horwood/Sarah Travis production of The Hot Mikado will be going on tour in September (not sure of precise venues yet though).

'Actually, Norma does not play an instrument. And Kathryn Evans is so amazing in the role even if someone hates the actor/muso concept, her performance is genuinely too great to miss'.

Very much agreed on this and know that others on here agree!

There is room in the West End for spectaculars as well as a couple of a/m shows in the smaller houses, great if they can turn a flop musical into something good, that is when a/m could come into there own.

I have no knowledge of spend spend spend, but it is good that the watermill is taking something on that flopped and bring it back to stage, I guess it would be fair to say spend spend spend would never see the light of a West End stage via the conventional route!

One of the shows problems (and there were so many!) was that the production was far too big for the story.
It would probably work so much better as a small scale musical anyway.
On the other hand, I just wish it would get produced as a straight play, as it was written for the BBC originally.
When the BBC broadcast it as one of its 'Play For Today' presentations way back in 1977, it was one of their biggest audiences at the time.
I remember being fascinated by the TV screening and writing to the Beeb asking for a script- 3 weeks later they delivered- i still have it today!
