Is Spiderman Taymor's Waterloo?
With word of mouth that The Tempest sucks, and after the poor Box Office of Across the Universe, could Spiderman be Taymor's downfall? She has had a hit with The Lion King. What else has she done that has been successful financially?

Julie Taymor has vision. She has had both critical and financial successes and failures. What is consistent is that she's always brings vision to her work. Plain and simple. And, I for one am a huge fan. I am never bored at Taymor production.
I would think Frida more than recouping and getting awards can be considered a success, though people point more to Salma Hayek's dedication to the project as not just playing Kahlo but putting her own money into the film that was years in development under her, not Taymor.
Strummergirl, it was in fact Hayek holding tight reins on the movie that made it a success. Taymor needs a strong outside influence to keep her in check. With Lion King it was Disney, with Frida it was Hayek.
All of Taymor's ego driven vehicles have been flops. Expensive, budget busting flops. Beautiful to look at, at times but heartless and emotionless.
That's what I thought SNAFU. I actually do remember reading the critical receptions that the movie was a successful vehicle for Hayek in spite of some of the artistic excesses.
As I have said before, Taymor makes very beautiful pictures. It is the story telling and emotions she has big problem with. Watching a Taymor project, I am never drawn into the story. Never asked to invest emotionally with the story being told. Instead, I am asked to be a mere spectator to watch from a distance the 'Genius" that is Taymor. Gets very boring after a short time.
