If you haven't heard any of SpongeBob yet, you really should give it a listen. Sony Masterworks, Nickelodeon , etc. have really done a great job recording and producing; they spent a lot of money and you can hear it. (Not like, imo, the awful, flat Hello Dolly). Does anyone know how many are in the orchestra? I can't tell from the Playbill page online. Julie McBride is the conductor and they sound terrific.
Even with all the different songwriters, you can hear how very theatrical the songs are; Bikini Bottom Day, Daddy Knows Best, Chop To The Top, Hero Is My Middle Name...especially the Alex Ebert, Cyndi Lauper songs...most of them really. Movies release soundtrack recordings with various artists all the time; I guess this is a Broadway version of "various artists".
This show may have source material that's quite unique but with these songwriters, the rock and/or pop influences are there; (and the cast is definitely giving, in some cases, a star turn performance). We're seeing it Christmas week, so I'm hoping for the best.
