Spring Awakening 07/23 Matinee

I rushed today¡¦s matinee and was really excited to see the show, even though I just saw it last Wednesday. I went into the show open minded, hoping to see new takes on roles that I've seen time and time again. Gerard was on as Moritz and Jenna and Alice were in the ensemble.

Honestly, the cast that has been there was great! I was reading over my review of last weeks show review and the same criticism holds true.

Alexandra Socha- Wow. That's really all I can say about this girl. I think she is the epitome of what Wendla is supposed to be. She really conveys the innocence that I thought was lost when other actresses played the role. Her acting is phenomenal, especially in the stork scene. I loved her Mamma Who Bore Me today- it was the best I¡¦ve ever heard, sweet yet powerful at the same time.

Kyle Riabko- This week Kyle¡¦s first act was better, although he was still mean. I don't like how he plays the role so mean- Melchior isn't like that! Honestly, I don't understand his take on this role but that's another story.

Gerard Canonico- Absolutely amazing. I feel like he played Moritz so true and real. His acting was believable and his singing was gorgeous. I've seen two others people play Moritz- Johnnny Gallagher and Blake and now Gerard. Honestly, Gerard was my absolutely favorite. He put a refreshing twist on this part and he was hands down the best. Gerard, aside from being insanely cool and great at SD, is ridiculously talented! I've seen him as Georg, Ernst, and now Moritz and every role he does he does perfectly. I'll be there on August 4th with my friend Liz I can't stop saying enough about him! He simply PWNS!

Emma Hunton- I like her. It¡¦s as simple as that. Her voice is absolutely amazing. Her acting, I feel needs some work. The monologue before "Blue Wind" was all over the place and it felt very unorganized to me.

Amanda Castanos- Wow. She is fierce and is a perfect Martha. In my opinion, she is much better than Lilli was. There is no criticism to be given, because her performance was flawless. The Dark I Know Well took my breath away, literally.

Andrew Durand- Ok he was my least favorite addition to my cast. Warning: I don't want this criticism to sound harsh or mean by any means. I know he's new and needs some time to adjust to this part, but what I saw today was awful. His voice was strange and his "Touch Me" riff was awful. I miss Skylar so much and after today I can't even describe how much I wish he was back. Andrew was a huge disappointment and I really hope he improves because I strongly disliked his Georg.

Emily Kinney- Aw she was cute! It was different seeing a blonde as Anna because I'm so used to Phoebe and Eryn! But she was adorable and gave it her all!

Caitilin Kinnunen- Along with Andrew, she was my least favorite addition to the cast. Her Thea was boring, uninteresting, lackluster, and bizarre. She hid behind everyone and it looked like she felt very uncomfortable on stage. She needs to get into it-not look bored or confused. I didn¡¦t like how she acted, especially how she said "Melchi Gabor, he's such a radical" I didn't like her at all.

Gabriel Violett- His Otto was great! Spot on! Keep up the great work, Gabe!

Some Notes:

- Alex's stork scene was perfection today.
- In MWBMR I feel like Emma needs to tone it down a bit; she is going absolutely insane while most of the other girls aren't. Her melodrama is a huge distraction for me in this scene.
- Gerard's Moritz was absolute perfection.
- In the beginning of My Junk, Socha needs to tone it down after Thea talks about Melchior Gabor, her face is a bit much.
- I loved how Gerard said the line, "Give me consumption and take these sticky dreams awayy" <3
- I adored Socha¡¦s acting leading into WOYB, especially "what time is it?"
- Socha's face at the start of WOYB was great- she looked shocked and puzzled at the same time. It was the first time I liked this song and didn¡¦t find it boring!
- Gerard's, "I'm ready now" line was amazing- it brought tears to my eyes!
- I love how Socha says, "but I'm not married..."when she's at the doctor's office!
- Overall a good show, I just hope that Caitlin and Andrew improve, which I'm sure they will =D
