Spring Awakening 11/24 SPOILERS

I absolutely loved this show. The things that struck me the most were the music and the incredible lighting. The only thing that sort of irked me about this show was how there were so many subplots thrown in there, and often unresolved. For example, the "my daddy beats me" vignette is only semi-resolved when Martha remarks something like "I'm glad they beat me...shows they care" after Wendla dies. The acting was definitely stronger on the male side, and I wish Moritz lasted longer so that he could have sang another fantastic song. Lea Michele has an amazing voice, but her acting was a little dry and everything was over pronounced. The only thing I gathered from her character was that she was naive and wanted to be cared for. My favorite girl in the cast was definitely Phoebe Strole. Martha was iffy, as was the girl who looked like she was 12 but was doing Christina Aguilera gesticulations.

Well, anyways. Skylar Astin was excellent, taking part in one of the best scenes in the show when he's at the piano and Hanschen is in his bedroom, "Focus more on the left hand." I don't think Gideon Glick gets enough props for the role he plays in the male seduction scene, the best is Gideon's facial reaction when Jon Wright jumps into his internal monologue. I thought Jon Groff did a really solid job in tackling a monster role in Melchior. Gallagher was of course a beast on the stage. Brian Johnson was also fantastic, although I felt like everyone was given a subplot but him.

This show is definitely worth seeing. The story is fantastic, as is the music, singing, most of the acting, and the lighting. I hope it lasts long on Broadway, so that it can continue to give a crapload of talented young adults their Broadway debuts.

I agree, I wish Brian Johnson had more to do, I really liked his voice.
