There was a casting notice for a film version of Spring Awakening out a while ago, but it was NOT for the musical and had basically nothing to do with this Spring Awakening. That is probably what clovergirl is talking about.

This wad of trash show doesn't come within MILES of being anything close to something similar to Brechtian theatre.

What are you talking about - the microphones alone are Brechtian. The mechanisms of theatre completely laid bare, cast members singing from the "audience," the band sitting onstage, the upstage walls visible, no spectacle to speak of, lots of clear commentary on the ills of society...should I continue?

Well my reason for hoping it doesn't go to film so soon is selfish - I'm waiting for the rights to be released so I can direct it here.

And since we're listing favorite stage-to-film musicals, don't forget CHICAGO, SUPERSTAR, GREASE, WEST SIDE STORY, GUYS AND DOLLS (come on, join in, you know you want to), MY BEST FRIENDS WEDDING...

(Just kidding...)

I love Spring Awakening.

Why ruin it?

I joined today for the purpose of telling you this. I wanted to clear up the rumors surrounding this project since not a lot of information about it is widely available.

The vision is simple; to preserve Wedekinds' intentions and to bring truth to his unique "tragicomedy". The dark humor of this story seems to get lost in the retelling.

A movie based on the Wedekind play makes sense. It's got a darkness to it that would make an awesome indie movie. SA fans should be prepared for that. In the play, Melchior does rape Wendla, while the musical shies away from it. I'll bet the movie "goes there."

A movie on the musical Spring Awakening would not be good, for all of the reasons posted here.

I would much rather see a movie of Hairspray than Spring Awakening. I thought the movie of Sweeney Todd was horrendous.
