His depression and psychological problems go beyond not getting money to flee to America.

He's not exactly getting mad at Melchior's mom, or about the lack of money. He's mad at life for beating him down. The money is just a minor part of it for him; like a last straw.

And I think that this is one of the key aspects of the show - it is an entire production about the overwhelming power of emotion that one experiences at that age. He would have been fine dealing with his situation if he had been a few years older, but at his age and in his place in life he was overwhelmed. The reason for the song might seem far-fetched when you aren't living it - I think that the music is meant to convey the angst one feels despite the fact that the situation itself might be managable.

Also...this isn't a modern piece. It's set in a different time and place. If you lived where he lived the fact that you couldn't escape might have meant a lot more.

Fromage, that may be true, but Fiyero is asking about Moritz, not Melchior. Although I'm sure many people get a hard feeling over Bashoff or Gallagher too.
