Does anyone know if there is a musical about the life of St. Francis of Assi? Any help would be great!!!
Don't know if there is one, but there's some good subject material there - would be interesting to see what a good writer could come up with.
There is an opera, I know, and a Musical about Connie Francis in the works, but other than that I am not sure.
Wasn't there a movie? Brother Sun, Sister Moon?
B
Yes, there is a film from the seventies called Brother Sun, Sister Moon, and boy is it cheesy! As if it wasn't enough that the film made Francis look so weird, those songs by Donovan added another dimension of weirdness! Someone bought me a VHS of it as a gift before I went on a Franciscan pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy.
I am very familiar with the Olivier Messiaen opera Saint François d'Assise and own the complete 4-disc/4-hour recording from the Salzburg Festival. It's a very deep opera that requires a lot of patience when listened to. I once wrote a 20-page analysis of it from top to bottom. No easy task, but I got an A!
And there IS a musical based on St. Francis and I believe its title was: Francis. It was created entirely (or maybe partially--I'm not so sure) by John Buscema, who was also responsible for writing a comic book about Francis' life: Francis: Brother of the Universe. I once found more information on Francis at one of the theatre databases on the web (though that information no longer exists). It was an off-broadway show with none other than John Dossett as St. Francis. I wish I could find more on this, but to no avail...
