Tomorrow, August 25th, is the Feast Day of St. Genesius, the patron saint of actors.

Genesius was beheaded in the year 303 AD under the orders of the Emporer Diocletian. Genesius had been performing in a play that mocked Christian baptism and had a religious conversion on stage and that offended the emperor.

May St. Genesius keep all our friends in the acting profession in his care.

That was beautiful Dollypop, I am familiar with St. Genesius --- may he continue
to protect and watch over all the actors and people involved in all of the arts as well.

As the play that Genesius was performing at the time of his on-stage conversion was a farce, he is also the patron saint of comedians.

I know this sounds like I'm being a smart-ass, but many moons ago (1960s), St. Genesius was the name of a very popular gay bar in Los Angeles. It was the best piano bar I've ever been in, with the likes of Joanne Worley singing their hearts out. The view was spectacular and 'twas rumored that Greta Garbo had been there. One of the most fun places I've ever been.

St. Malachy's also has a shrine to St. Genesius in the back of the church.

As the play that Genesius was performing in when he received his religious conversion was a farce that mocked Christian baptism, Genesius is also the patron saint of comedians--something that I pointed out to my pastor this morning.

At the suggestion of DOLLYPOP that I post it, here is the prayer to St. Genesius:

Dear St. Genesius, illustrious patron of actors, I place myself under your protection. Bless me in the studies of drama.
Noble St. Genesius, loving patron of the theatre and its people, teach me how to act mt well my parts. Bearing God so within myself that through the profection of my performances, He may reach beyond the footlights to touch the sensitive, restless hearts of His creatures.
Great St.Genesius, help me in my drama of life. Guide me, inspire me that through the beauty of the drama and through the power of acting I may elevate the thoughts and feelings of those who watch it,
Valiant St. Genesius, coach my every drama, so, that I may fulfill the obligation of leading my friends and spectatiors to the love and beauty of the Devine Creator of all drama.
Holy martyr, St. Genesius, guide me, protect me and help me in the stage of life. Present me to my Creator when at last my drama of life is ended. Amen.
St. Genesius, hear me
St. Genesius, pray for me.

I hope it does not offend anyone that a prayer is posted on this board, but since Genesius is the patron saint of actors and theater, it is appropriate for anyone with a religious background. Anyone else can simply ignore it.

I did a lot of theatre at a Jesuit university in DC. We named our annual theatre awards after St. Genesius. Our own version of the Tony award (we called them Gennys).

I guess no one realized he’s also the patron Saint to epileptics and thieves.
