St. Lawrence College.....etc

Posted: 11/24/04 at 9:02pmSo I've started applying for MT schools and this is one of them. It's a relatively new program (in Brockville Ontario) and I thought one of my Canadian friends may have heard something about it? Any feedback would be great. Also I was recently told that Sheridan College usually only accepts people who have taken a year at another MT school?? Is this true? Thanks Updated On: 11/24/04 at 09:02 PM

Hi,
St. Lawrence's other campus is the city where I go to university.
Because it is a brand new program I'd be hesitant to reccomend it. The standards for admission are not very high, and hardly competitive. Based on who I know is on faculty, I think the program has potential, but will not start off as anything strong.
My strongest suggestion would be Sheridan. I have never heard of that prerequisite MT year. I was accepted into Sheridan's MT program out of grade 12 (in Ontario at the time we also had OAC- grade 13), but I decided to not go and complete grade 13, then go to university for voice. Sheridan will take everyone who deserves to be there, but you MUST be a triple threat if you're a girl. MUST MUST MUST.
Sheridan currently has a "music theatre preparation program" beacuse so many people try year after year and don't get into their MT program. It is a one-year program that prepares you for their MT program or the industry, it just brings you up to where you should be triple-threat wise.
Try for Sheridan. If you were planning on going in 10 years once St. Lawrence is established, then maybe I'd have better advice. St. Lawrence as a whole is not the finest when it comes to colleges, it's sort of a B+ institution.

All I know about St. Lawrence College was that Viggo Mortensen went there.
....Mmmm....Viggo....

Roxie.....
Just a suggestion, but if you plan on being a student next year, then keep an eye out in January/ Feburary for the Charlottetown Festival Young Company auditions.
Smaller provinces definitely have an advantage with this. The auditions are done by open call in pretty much every province. They take one performer from each province (hence why someone in NB would have a greater advantage than someone in Ontario), usually a triple threat. It's a great audition experience, and it's all students (highschool and post-secondary). Sheridan was largely represented at the Ontario auditions last year. Look into it, you can get details on the charlottetown festival website. The young company trains at the festival and performs noon-hour shows at the festival for about two months during the summer.
