At the stagedoor for "The Blue Room," my friend asked Nicole Kidman to sign a copy of her "Far and Away" novel (this was when Nicole was still married to Tom Cruise) and Nicole got a kick out it, saying she hadn't thought about that in years and flipped through it. At the stagedoor for "DRS," I had Lucie Arnaz sign a playbill from "They're Playing Our Song" that I had bought at the flea market and she was excited that someone young had heard of that show. In recent years, she has gotten a lot more open with responding to fans who bring up her parents but I know she used to resent it just a teeny bit (and her relationship with her mother was always tempestuous) so I'm sure, although I didn't know this at the time, that she appreciated somebody bringing up something that she had actually done herself.

As for why actors don't want to sign stuff from their pasts, its because they almost always end up on eBay and they don't want some broker who doesn't care making money off their signatures. You can't blame them for that.

Sutton is the only young-ish actor I can think of who is a Broadway name but not a household one who basically never comes out the stage door. I can think of some veterans who don't (Mary Louise Wilson, etc), but no other person in her age group. I find it a little surprising because she is a "Broadway baby" and it's kind of a Broadway tradition, but she obviously has the right to do or not do what she chooses.

Are there other younger Broadway stars who basically never come out? (By Broadway stars, I mean people best known for their stage work.)

"What was the name of that cheese that I like?" "you can't run away forever...but there's nothing wrong with getting a good head start" "well I hope and I pray, that maybe someday, you'll walk in the room with my heart"

I love Lucie Arnaz! You can tell she's a genuinely kind hearted person!

I was at the final stage door for "The Pajama Game" last year. It was a little awkward since I hadn't seen the show myself and wasn't really following that production at all. I was there as favor to a friend who had to catch her train and couldn't wait for Patrick Wilson (who couldn't have been nicer) herself...so I was her proxy that night.

I don't remember who the actress was off the top of my head because I wasn't paying attention...I was having a long, interesting conversation with an older woman so I only half-witnessed the exchange...but apparently this one lady in line had about ten items for the actress to sign, all from one or two previous shows. The actress declined, saying she would just sign ONE item regardless of which show. The woman was pretty huffy and didn't want it signed TO anyone, either. It was fairly obvious the stuff was meant for eBay.

But, in a lot of other cases, the actors haven't really minded signing things from previous shows when the request is coming from a fan who really follows there work and is sincere. Carolee Carmello didn't mind when someone at Lestat asked her to sign a picture from "Remember WENN."

Even if it's a show with bad memories...I know one of my friends asked Hugh Panaro to sign a "Red Shoes" Playbill for another friend. He was amused that someone had actually seen it.

Sutton Foster signed after Little Women, at least she did on Kids' Night on Broadway. It was freezing but she was friendly and in no hurry to get away.

On John Tartaglia's last night at Avenue Q, we got signatures on an old off-Broadway Q program...everyone was tickled to see it and Jeff Marx was particularly amused by it.
