Posted: 5/2/05 at 12:31pmWhat is the difference between the two. Is an standby someone who only plays that part and is there every night waiting. And then is an understudy someone who is the cast but can step in if necessary. Please clarify my ignorance.....

You got it right.
Standby's do not play any other part than the one they are assigned to.
Understudies are in the cast and perform every night. If the lead is out and the standby can't make it that night, then it goes to the understudy.
Example:
Radames: Adam Pascal
Radames's Standby: Cheyenne Jackson
Radames's Understudy: Chuck Segulia (is that his last name?)
If Pascal is on vacation, Jackson goes on as Radames. If during that week's vacation Jackson gets sick then Segulia would have gone on.
