I just saw Wicked in Chicago, which is supposed to star Ana Gasteyer as Elphaba, but instead saw her "standby", Kristy Cates. I thought Kristy was great in the role, but I would have liked to seen Ana, since she is supposed to be the "star". Also, is it common for the standby to perform regulary during the week? If so, it might be nice to let theatre goers know the performance schedule of the star, so those wanting to see the featured performer are not disappointed. I guess what seemed odd was that Ana was on a live local television show the same night, adding more mystery as to why she was not performing in Wicked that afternoon.

a standby is like an understudy but isnt in the ensemble, they have to be within a certain radius of the theater at all times with a pager though. check on the search engine, this subject is always popping up on bww.

OK, so if a standy is an exclusive substitute,so to speak, do they also need understudies for the role?
Is there a reason that Glinda is covered only by understudies and not a standby?

Thanks BwayLeadman, I edited the original question. I didn't mean to get off on the wrong foot.
