Off stage cover or understudies have to be present for all 8 shows but are allowed to leave for the evening once the person they are covering has made their final entrance. Or at least, that's how it works in London.

i have heard that they have to be there for all shows but can leave once the second act starts.

This made me think of that funny monologue in Elaine Stritch at Liberty where she is Ethel Merman's stand-by.

They generally leave after the final entrance or one of the last songs that way if something were to happen, the lead actor could probably handle it without it being noticeable.
but what about standbys in more than one show. i remember reading somewhere that one of the avenue q understudies also was a standby in beauty and the beast
i guess my question is, has anybody ever met one of the standbys after a performance that they weren't in?
